What Is a Zygomatic Implant?
A zygomatic implant is a larger type of implant compared to conventional ones and is an advanced surgical technique focusing on the upper jaw. It is applied to patients with severe bone loss, significant tooth damage, or teeth that have loosened due to advanced gum disease. While standard implants are typically 8–10–12 mm in length, zygomatic implants range between 30–50 mm depending on the patient’s jaw structure. These implants have a special surface and are designed to anchor into the zygoma (cheekbone), which has a very dense bone structure. When the upper jawbone is insufficient for traditional implants, zygomatic implants make treatment possible by being fixed directly into the zygomatic bone.

How Is Zygomatic Implant Treatment Performed?
Zygomatic implant treatment is an advanced surgical procedure performed by specialized surgeons. First, the structure of the jawbone is examined, and the distance between the zygoma and the upper jaw is measured. The implant plan is then customized based on these measurements. After personalized planning, anesthesia is applied, and the procedure is carried out by creating specially designed channels and placing the implants at the correct angles. Once the implants are placed, the healing period begins, and after approximately 3 months, the prosthetic restorations are prepared.

Who Is Eligible for Zygomatic Implant Treatment?
Zygomatic implants are recommended for patients who experience severe bone loss in the upper jaw. Individuals with advanced periodontal disease or significant bone loss due to tooth loss may have a reduced chance of success with standard implant procedures. In such cases, zygomatic implants are the preferred advanced surgical option. They can also be applied to patients who lost teeth at an early age, those with genetic predispositions, or individuals who have experienced tooth loss due to certain medical conditions. This method is suitable for anyone whose upper jawbone is not adequate for conventional implant placement.

Healing Process After Zygomatic Implant Treatment
Zygomatic implant treatment is a major surgical procedure, and certain precautions must be taken after the operation. Hard or sharp-edged foods should be avoided for a period, and soft foods are recommended instead. Extremely hot foods should be avoided, and warm foods are preferred. Applying ice to the treatment area can help reduce possible bleeding and swelling. Patients must follow the diet and medication plan prescribed by their dentist for the first 3 months. After this period and once the prosthetic teeth are placed, patients may return to their normal eating habits.

How Long Do Zygomatic Implants Last?
Clinical observations show that successfully applied zygomatic implants remain durable and functional for many years. However, long-term success depends on the patient’s adherence to the postoperative care instructions provided by their dentist.
