Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric Dentistry, which is part of the Clinical Sciences of the Faculty of Dentistry, is the only branch of dentistry that operates based on age. Also known as Children’s Dentistry, it focuses on the diseases and treatment of primary and permanent teeth in children until the full eruption of all permanent teeth.
Dentists who receive specialized education in this field are called pediatric dentists (pedodontists). Pedodontists treat dental conditions in children from infancy through adolescence.
Clinical applications of pediatric dentistry cover a wide range of dental procedures. The main areas of focus include preventive dentistry (oral hygiene education, fluoride applications, and fissure sealants), preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatments, and nutritional counseling.
Pediatric dentistry also involves educating and informing parents about dental treatments and oral care practices. Additionally, it includes the treatment of caries in primary and permanent teeth, root canal treatments for children, and the management of dental trauma such as fractures caused by falls or accidents.
Other areas include the extraction of primary and permanent teeth, the use of space maintainers to prevent tooth migration, preventive treatments for gum diseases in children, and the management of genetically occurring dental problems.
